He’s man’s best friend for a reason. Your dog helps ease stress better than any human, says new research from Penn State University.
In the study, people hung out with either a close friend or Golden Retriever before being interviewed for a sought-after job and taking a taxing math test.
Participants who palled around with the pooch had a 10 percent lower heart rate during the stressful activities than those who spent time with a buddy.
What’s more, the canine lowered levels of cortisol—a hormone released when you’re stressed—by 50 percent, says study author Robert Matchock, Ph.D. Dog lovers also felt less lonely.
Just get home from a long, tough day at work? Pet your dog for 5 minutes or take him for a quick walk around the block, Matchock says. It’ll make you and Fido feel better.
